Context
Upwey Primary School is situated in the Dandenong Ranges, approximately
thirty-five kilometres to the east of Melbourne. The school was established in
1934 and has a current enrolment of just under 100 students. The “old” double
storey building was officially opened in 1947. The school is set in extensive
grounds with a variety of playground areas. It consists of modern and well
designed buildings and is located on a picturesque site which takes advantage of
the atmosphere and beauty of the Dandenong Ranges. All of the buildings are
located on a level section of land adjacent to Burwood Highway.
The school has been involved in “Sustainable Schools” and “Environmental
Education” initiatives and a number of programs including composting, recycling
and walking school bus have been established. The development of these programs
has continued throughout the 2004 - 2006 Charter period. During 2007 the school
will complete a self-evaluation and a school review with subsequent development
of a Strategic Plan 2007-2010.
Our school is adjacent to Upwey High School and near the Upwey Pre-school.
Close co-operation and interaction exists between the schools/pre-school as a
result of regular transition activities. The relationship produces an ideal
climate and a seamless transition through all levels of education.
We are particularly keen to meet the needs of our gifted and talented
students and encourage them to achieve their full potential. Provision of the
opportunity and encouragement for our students to participate in national
academic competitions, locally conducted programs such as GATEWays (Gifted And
Talented Education) are two means by which this objective is achieved.
We encourage and demonstrate high levels of community involvement in
programs. Being a small school we provide a caring and nurturing environment
with very much a community feel. Consequently we are well-placed to be able to
establish a personal and responsive relationship with our students and their
families. The provision of support and, where necessary, specifically targeted
welfare programs, developed and implemented in consultation with parents and
specialist support personnel, is a particular strength of our school.
This web site contains details of our school organisation. As such, it will
hopefully be an aid to communication and a handy reference when questions arise
about everyday organisational matters. However, there are bound to be instances
in which the information you need will not have been included. If, and when,
this is the case, please do not hesitate to contact the school either by
telephone or in person. I am sure that you will find that all staff members are
keen to converse with you and to deal with any questions or concerns that you
may have.

Principal
